The Shack by William P. Young
I
was a little disconcerted when I went to get a copy of The Shack. I had
to go to the Christian inspiration section of the book store. This
scared me a little because I was concerned it would be pretty
fundamentalist. I was VERY surprised by what I found. The book is
about a family whose daughter is kidnapped and murdered. The father is
in despair and struggling with life and spirituality, which is, of
course, understandable. He receives a letter that claims to be from God
asking him to meet at the shack where his daughter was murdered. When
he finally decides to go to the meeting he doesn’t know what to expect.
The story continues where the main character spends the weekend with God
the Father (who appears as an African-American woman), the Holy Spirit
(who is an Asian woman), and Jesus (who is a Jewish man). He also
encounters Sophia in the form of a Hispanic woman. I found myself
pretty enthralled with the book and finished it 2 sittings within 24
hours. It’s very well done and as long as I replace Christos for Jesus
it fits very well into my spiritual view. I enjoyed it immensely and
found myself deeply touched. I recommend this book to everyone!
